Alhumdulillah for Free Time

The Alhumdulillah Series

Alhumdulillah for Free Time

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet (SAWS) said, “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your riches before your poverty, your free time before your work, and your life before your death.” [Sahih]

We are all busy, some more than others…but in the hustle and bustle of it all, we all have those few moments in-between. Those few moments of free time that we get to choose how we spend. We could read a book, watch another episode on Netflix, spend time with friends, or just simply kick back and relax. However, those are not our only options.

We need to first understand that, ultimately, free time is a blessing from Allah SWT. Free time is an opportunity to take advantage of. Of course, we should take those moments to relax and refuel when needed, but in reality, we spend too much time focusing on unwinding with dunya pleasures. Too often, we forget that the ultimate way to unwind, relax and spend our free time is by worshipping the One who blessed us with that free time in the first place.

Remember your blessings, and remember to be grateful to Allah SWT for them by showing it. Show that you are grateful for your free time by engaging in acts of ibadah. Next time you have a few moments to spare in your busy life, take that moment to remember Allah SWT. Next time, challenge yourself to reach for the Qu’ran collecting dust on your shelf, instead of your phone. Engage in dhikr whenever you can. Make that free time count, make your blessings count.
